Cornwall and St Ives are ideal for great pre-Christmas breaks. There is still plenty of life in the town but without the summer crowds it is possible to park, enjoy a quieter drink in the pubs and find a cosy corner in the many restaurants.

Here is a sample of things to do in December, the dates below refer to December 2010 but this will give you an idea of what is on offer.

6th   Lost Gardens
of Heligan
  Cornish Christmas night 5.30-7.30pm – magical lantern lit tour of the gardens – mulled wine, choirs, shopping until 9pm.
8th-12th   Truro   Victorian Christmas Fayre – 80 exhibitors in Victorian costume, late night shopping, street entertainment.
11th   Truro   Street market – wide range of seasonal foods and gifts.

16th-21st   Penzance   Montol festival – fire lantern parades, fire displays, dancing, late night shopping.
18th   Truro   Street market (see 11th December for details).
22nd   Truro   For details see 1st December.
18th-31st   Mousehole   Christmas lights – the whole village and harbour are lit up in an internationally famous display: 5-11pm each night except the 19th when lights are switched off from 8-9pm in memory of the Penlee lifeboat tragedy.
